Breast lift surgery is performed for women with moderate to severe sagging of breasts to raise and create a firmer, normal looking breast. Who can undergo breast lift?

Increasing the size of the breast along with breast lift can also be done as two stage procedure, where the mastopexy is done first and breast augmentation is performed after a few weeks.

Breast lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

Pre operative markings are made prior to surgery.

The surgery involves 3 important steps-

1.Moving the nipple areola complex to a normal position 

2.Rearranging the breast tissue on the chest wall to correct the sagging

3.Removal of excess skin and a fine closure with or without drains.

The procedure is completed in 2-3 hours. You can return home the same day or stay back one night in hospital.

Recovery after breast lift surgery

The post operative period after breast lift is relatively pain free. Healing takes 2-3 weeks and during this time heavy physical exertion is to be avoided. Desk work and light physical activity can be resumed in 2-3 days. Antibiotics and pain medication is prescribed for 5-7 days after surgery.

A sports bra is to be worn for 1 month following surgery. Follow up examinations are recommended once a week for the initial month and then monthly visits

Risks of breast lift surgery

Breast lift surgery deals with the skin and breast tissue only. Standard risks of anesthesia exist.

Specific to the surgery, risks include infection, bleeding, poor healing of suture line, fat necrosis in breast tissue, asymmetry and thick scars.

Breast feeding after breast lift

Breast lift surgery is usually performed after breast feeding is stopped, so the issue of breast function is not important in most patients.

In women who are planning to have children and breast feed, breast lift surgery may affect your ability to breast fee normally. The milk ducts are not damaged in the surgery, although some of the glands may be injured. Top feeds may be required after breast lift surgery.

How long does the result last?

The result of a properly performed breast lift surgery will last for 10 years and more. However, the effects of gravity and ageing will continue to affect the breast shape to some extent.
