How is Abdominoplasty different from Liposuction?

Liposuction removes fat and fat cells only. Loose skin will not be corrected by Liposuction alone. That can be achieved by abdominoplasty surgery. Liposuction is a minimal access surgery with tiny incisions whereas tummy tuck surgery is an open procedure. Liposuction is often performed along with Abdominoplasty surgery so as to have an overall improvement in the abdominal contour by treating excess belly fat, loose skin and muscle weakness in one go. Women who have undergone multiple pregnancies, twin pregnancies or those who had big babies usually have severe weakness of abdominla wall. Sometimes weakness may be severe enough to cause hernia. In such cases the belly protrues out a lot and does not improve even with weight reduction. Many women have complained that they look "pregnant" all the time. Such muscle wall weakness can be repaired very well during tummy tuck surgery. Types of Abdominoplasty ?
1. Full Abdominoplasty- is performed when most of the lower belly skin is loose. Liposuction of excess fat is also performed at the same time- most often circumferentially to create three dimensional improvements.

A full Abdominoplasty /Tummy tuck requires 1-2 days of hospital stay.
Mini Tummy tuck can be a day care surgery if there are no compounding medical problems.
Following Abdominoplasty surgery, walking is allowed from the very next day. Lifting weights and other taxing work is not allowed for 6-8 weeks after the surgery. A corset/ pressure garment which supports the surgical area is to be worn for 4 weeks after the surgery.
There will be some amount of swelling over the abdomen. The swelling subsides maximally in 4 weeks and then tapers off in the following weeks.
Even though Abdominoplasty involves having a low and long incision, there is only minimal pain/discomfort on the incision- in fact; the area will be numb for weeks to months because of the nature of the surgery. Bruising will be evident on areas of Liposuction and resolves completely in 2-3 weeks.
Light work can be resumed 2 weeks after the surgery. Stretching of the abdomen is strictly to be avoided for 3 months.
