How is Abdominoplasty different from Liposuction?
Liposuction removes fat and fat cells only. Loose skin will not be corrected by Liposuction alone. That can be achieved by abdominoplasty surgery. Liposuction is a minimal access surgery with tiny incisions whereas tummy tuck surgery is an open procedure. Liposuction is often performed along with Abdominoplasty surgery so as to have an overall improvement in the abdominal contour by treating excess belly fat, loose skin and muscle weakness in one go. Women who have undergone multiple pregnancies, twin pregnancies or those who had big babies usually have severe weakness of abdominla wall. Sometimes weakness may be severe enough to cause hernia. In such cases the belly protrues out a lot and does not improve even with weight reduction. Many women have complained that they look "pregnant" all the time. Such muscle wall weakness can be repaired very well during tummy tuck surgery. This will result in drastic improvement in tummy shape.Use of plastic mesh is rarely required in abdominoplasty.Stretch marks below the navel are removed during this surgery.
Types of Abdominoplasty ?
1. Full Abdominoplasty- is performed when most of the lower belly skin is loose. All the skin below the navel is removed, the abdominal wall is tightened and closure is done in a fine line within the bikini border. The belly button is brought out and sutured in the anatomical location. Liposuction of excess fat is also performed at the same time- most often circumferentially to create three dimensional improvements.
2. Mini Abdominoplasty- is ideal for cases with minimal laxity only in the lowermost abdomen. The lose skin is removed and the abdominal wall tightened. As in full Abdominoplasty, a high definition Liposuction is also performed at the same time.
Anaesthesia- general anaesthesia when administered by an experienced anaesthesiologist and with complete intra operative monitoring is generally a safe and pleasant experience for most patients.

A full Abdominoplasty /Tummy tuck requires 1-2 days of hospital stay.
Mini Tummy tuck can be a day care surgery if there are no compounding medical problems.
Following Abdominoplasty surgery, walking is allowed from the very next day. Lifting weights and other taxing work is not allowed for 6-8 weeks after the surgery. A corset/ pressure garment which supports the surgical area is to be worn for 4 weeks after the surgery.
There will be some amount of swelling over the abdomen. The swelling subsides maximally in 4 weeks and then tapers off in the following weeks.
Even though Abdominoplasty involves having a low and long incision, there is only minimal pain/discomfort on the incision- in fact; the area will be numb for weeks to months because of the nature of the surgery. Bruising will be evident on areas of Liposuction and resolves completely in 2-3 weeks.
Light work can be resumed 2 weeks after the surgery. Stretching of the abdomen is strictly to be avoided for 3 months.
Safety and risks of Abdominoplasty
The safety aspects of Abdominoplasty are well known. Pre-operative preparation, surgical planning and execution are key factors in improving the safety and outcome following Abdominoplasty surgery.
Previous major surgeries on the abdomen, concomitant medical problems, combining multiple procedures are all known to increase the incidence of post-operative problems. Delay in healing, fluid accumulation, blood loss and skin breakdowns can occur, although the incidence is quite low. Chance of complications are more in people with severe obesity.
Scar of Abdominoplasty /Tummy Tuck
There is no way to remove loose skin without causing a scar. Most women accept a thin line as a worthwhile trade-off for a bulging belly. The scar becomes a matter of concern only in people with keloid/ thick scarring tendency. The incision is placed well inside the bikini line and sutured with the finest technique leaving behind a fine line which should fade over 6-8 months.
Other aesthetic procedures performed with Abdominoplasty ? Liposuction is the most common procedure performed along with Abdominoplasty. Breast lift or breast reduction is commonly combined with tummy tuck surgery. Vaginal tightening/ vaginoplasty is also done as part of mommy makeover. Fat tranfer to buttocks for butt augmentation is also becoming common now. Fat removed from the tummy can be transferred to buttocks for enhancement in the same session.
Pregnancy after Abdominoplasty ?
Abdominoplasty /Tummy tuck creates changes outside the abdominal wall, there is no effect on the internal organs. The ability to become pregnant and carry on with pregnancy is not affected by the surgery. It is better to do abdominoplasty after completing the family.
