Liposuction is ideal for people in normal and overweight category with  fat deposits which do not respond to efforts for fat reduction like regular exercise and calorie restricted diet. Liposuction is not a substitute for healthy living habits. Even in overweight people, Liposuction helps to markedly reduce fat from areas like abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks and arms to provide a sudden improvement in body shape, thereby increasing the motivation to adopt and continue with healthy living habits.

Safety of Liposuction

Liposuction  removes the fat and fat cells located between the skin and muscle only. There are no important structures in this area. A Liposuction surgery has no long term negative implications on your health. Liposuction is performed under local anaesthesia and general anaesthesia depending on the number of areas to be treated and the expected yield from the surgery. Larger Liposuctions are performed under general anaesthesia.

The safety of Liposuction directly depends on the amount of fat removed, the pre-existing medical condition of the patient and the skill and care exercised in the surgery. The surgery is performed with close monitoring of all vital parameters and in an accredited surgical centre following international guidelines on safety. Talk to your surgeon to more about the risks and side effects of fat reduction surgery.

Recovery after Liposuction

Once the swelling resolves( most of the swelling resolves in 3-4 weeks, the remaining swelling takes few more months to resolve), you can expect a body with aesthetic proportion and attractive figure. During the healing phase you may experience mild discomfort, numbness, slight weakness, bruising in the operated areas and soreness. A well-fitting corset is to be worn for the first 4 weeks after the Liposuction surgery. Normal bathing can be started after 4 days.  മലയാളത്തിൽ വായിക്കുവാൻ ഇവിടെ ക്ലിക്ക് ചെയ്യുക

How long does the result of liposuction last?

Most of the fat cells in the treated areas are removed permanently and our body does not have the ability to produce new fat cells or adipocytes. In that way liposuction provides permanent fat reduction. Liposuction will not alter your ability to eat or digest food, so if you over eat and do not burn it off with physical activity, the excess calories consumed will be converted and deposited as fat in areas that are not treated. In short, you can maintain the results for as long as you want provided you eat healthy and work out a little bit.

 Which areas can be treated?

Liposuction of thighs

The most common areas treated by Liposuction for fat reduction are the abdomen (tummy), sides, hips, thighs, arms, under chin and lower back.  The male chest is commonly treated by a modified technique of Liposuction which removes excess fat and gland tissue from man boobs (Gynecomastia).  Complications after Liposuctionമലയാളത്തിൽ വായിക്കുവാൻ ഇവിടെ ക്ലിക്ക് ചെയ്യുക

Liposuction is a relatively safe surgery and there are no long term serious side effects.Improvements in Liposuction technique over the last five decades and use of finer instruments have resulted in vastly improved results with increased safety. Swelling, soreness, bruising, numbness are to be expected in the initial few weeks. Serious complications like loss of skin, deep vein thrombosis, fluid overload and organ damage are extremely rare when safety measures are properly instituted. The chance of having an adverse outcome is more in medically compromised patients like people with uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure and in heavy smokers. Long duration of surgery and very large volumes of Liposuction also increase the chance of some of the complications. Fluid collections or seroma can occur in the initial few weeks after surgery in less than 5% cases, and this can be treated well by aspirating the collected fluid.

 Medication after Liposuction?

Medications are required only for 5-7 days after the surgery. Pain medications are usually prescribed.

Techniques of Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction of hips and flanks

The most popular and best method of Liposuction is Tumescent Liposuction, where a large amount of specially formulated fluid is injected into the fat cells before they are suctioned out. The fluid contains local anesthetic to numb the areas and adrenaline to minimize the blood loss.Power Liposuction utilizes a power driven cannulae to reduce the effort in taking out the fat. Power Liposuction is ideal for male breast reduction and in cases of redo Liposuction.Ultrasonic Liposuction uses ultrasound energy to break and emulsify the fat cells before aspiration. Ultrasonic Liposuction has the theoretical advantage of having less blood loss and more retraction of the skin during healing. The number of complications including skin loss and fluid accumulations are significantly higher with Ultrasonic Liposuction. Laser Liposuction also works in similar fashion as ultrasonic Liposuction and carries almost similar risks.

Skin healing after Liposuction

The skin is a very elastic and dynamic structure which has the ability to adjust to change in form. Following fat reduction in an area, the overlying skin shrinks over few weeks to few months. This is particularly so in younger individuals. The elasticity of skin is considerably less in cases of massive weight loss and over the tummy of women who have delivered children. In such cases, the shrinkage or adaptation of the skin may not be enough and additional procedures like body lift or tummy tuck may be required.

Maximum fat removed by Liposuction

Up to twenty litres of fat have been removed safely in rare instances; amounts of 10-15 litres (mega liposuction) are increasing in frequency in India. Larger volumes of Liposuction should be performed only in a hospital setting with monitoring facilities.Large volume Liposuctions are performed under general anesthesia and following strict safety protocols. The safety of large volume Liposuctions is well established when performed under expert care. It is safer to do smaller volumes and multiple sessions than mega liposuction.
